2010 Spring Classes

Registration for spring classes at the Johnson County Community College location is open until Tuesday, Jan. 26. Don't delay! Check out our class offerings below.

Starlight continues to refine its roster of performing arts classes for youth of all ages and interests. But, do you find that your schedule doesn't allow you to drive to Starlight Theatre for classes? No problem! In addition to our classes offered at Starlight Theatre, this spring we will be offering Starlight classes at four satellite locations throughout the Kansas City metro area. Starlight has joined forces with Johnson County Community College, Liberty Parks and Recreation, Metropolitan Community College-Longview, and the Park Hill Community Education Program to provide Starlight classes taught by our very own teaching artists in locations that are convenient to you!

The classes below will be offered at Starlight and all of our satellite locations. Simply find the class or classes in which you are interested, then contact your desired location directly to register. Registration contact information is provided after the class descriptions below.

Pre-K - Ages 3-5

MY FIRST ACTING CLASS - ACT IT UP
Sign up your budding artists for this super fun, interactive theatre class. Children jump right into high-energy warm-ups, silly (and not so silly) song activities and imaginative theatre games. Top it off with a read-aloud story that the children act out afterward, and you’ve got yourself a fabulously fun, first-time acting class.

Grades 1 - 3

ACTING I - ADVENTURES IN ACTING
Have your beginning performer join us on an adventure through the amazing world of acting! Students will give their imaginations a real workout while discovering the basics of how to use their voices and bodies to tell a story. It's a great first look at commanding a stage!

MUSICAL THEATRE I - SING OUT
Got a singer with a song in his/her heart? Here's a chance for your musically inclined child to learn the "nitty gritty" of controlling breath and projecting voice to the back of the room. We even teach the basics of musicianship.

ACTING II - JOURNEYS IN ACTING
This is the place for kids with a bit of acting experience under their belts who are ready to take it to the next level. Your child will act like a pro after learning theatrical vocabulary, various acting techniques, how to use your body to tell a story onstage and more.
Wednesdays, January 20 - May 5 (no classes the week of March 15 for Spring Break)

Grades 7 - 8

MUSICAL THEATRE II - SHOWSTOPPERS
Middle schools kids will loosen up their vocal chords and sing some of Broadway’s most popular musical numbers - from the beloved classics to today’s smash hit sensations. Students will brush up on their group and solo singing skills, all the while learning how to “sell it” (as they say in the biz).

ACTING III/IMPROVISATION - OFF THE CUFF
This "create as you go" class will help kids focus, listen, react and work as a team while playing a scene. Art will truly imitate life as students glean from their own experiences to co-create original theatre works. Students will learn to use instinct, body and voice to command the stage, leaving more confident with auditioning, working with others, and ad-libbing.

ASPIRING ARTISTS: An Acting Class for Artists with Disabilities
There’s something for everyone in the theatre! Know an aspiring artist who wants to brush up on theatre skills who just so happens to have a disability? This acting class is designed around the interests and development of each student, regardless of his/her type of disability. Together, we will enjoy loads of artistic expression while having tons of fun learning the basics of acting and the theatre!
This class is only offered at Metropolitan Community College-Longview and Johnson County Community College satellite locations.
Thursdays, January 21 - May 6 (no classes the week of March 15 for Spring Break)

A word about the Starlight Theatre Academy Teaching Artists:


Justin Legris

(Spring 2010, JCCC---Musical Theatre I) started out as a young performer at Idyllwild Arts Academy Theater in California, and has a wide range of performing and teaching experience.  Justin received his bachelors degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.  He spent four summers performing with The Ohio Light Opera in Wooster, OH.  Some of his roles and opera performances include;  Claude in Maytime, Blind in Die Fledermaus, Njegus in The Merry Widow, Bobby Joe in Regrets Only, and Jamie in My Fair Lady.  Mr. Legris has taught Music Education K-12 in Kansas and Louisiana, and has additional training in theater, dance, and piano.  While still singing and teaching today, Justin is continuing his education in a new direction by starting medical school at the University of Kansas in July of 2010.  He encourages the youth of today to always keep their love of music and performing alive, and plans on doing just that as part of his new journey as a doctor.

Erin Jackson-Legris

(Spring 2010, JCCC---Musical Theatre I) is a native of Kansas City, and is thrilled to be working with the best theatre in town! Erin completed her bachelors degree from Pittsburg State University in vocal performance in 2006. She then continued on to Louisiana State University on a full ride to complete her masters degree in vocal performance. Erin has done various performing throughout college and after, including three summer seasons with The Ohio Light Opera in Wooster, Ohio. Some of her roles include; Gianetta in The Gondoliers, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Zaneetta in The Music Man, Sour Genevieve in Sour Angelica, Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, and Madame Hertz in The Impresario. Since moving back to the Kansas City area Erin has been teaching voice at Kansas City Community College and performed with The Kansas City Civic Opera this past summer. Erin plans on continuing her career performing and auditioning after the birth of her first child in February---as well as teaching youth---our creative leaders of tomorrow!

Vi Tran

(Spring 2010, Park Hill---Acting II) began performing as a toddler in the refugee camps of Southeast Asia. His fellow refugees took pity on the young and literally starving artist, giving him what food they could spare. He holds a MA in Theatre Directing and a BA in Theatre/English, both from Kansas State University, and has contributed his talents to Starlight Theatre, Coterie Theatre, Unicorn Theatre, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre, Crossroads Theatre Company (NYC), Playhouse on the Square (Memphis, TN) and the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts’ Summer Playwriting Intensive in Washington D.C. Vi serves as facilitator for Coterie Theatre's "Reaching the Write Minds" playwriting-in-the-schools program, and for Artist, INC, a professional artist career development seminar. A singer-songwriter, Vi’s debut folk pop record, “Goodbye, Summer” will be available in late February 2010. www.vitranmusic.com
