In The Heights Review: Starlight has a contemporary winner with “In the Heights”

In the Heights seems fresh and spontaneous despite its long gestation and history. Originally conceived by student composer Lin-Manuel Miranda during his college years, the story attracted the interest of the Broadway producers of Rent and The Drowsy Chaperone in 2000. After workshops, additional collaborations and refinement, the show opened in Connecticut and then moved to an off-Broadway theater in New York for seven years. After more than 200 performances it finally moved to Broadway, but not without even more changes to the script and score.

For Longtime Starlight volunteers, a national honor shines

When she was invited to volunteer on the Women’s Committee at Starlight Theatre in 1969, Jan Morevitska accepted the offer for a single reason. “I’ve just always loved theater — we’ve just always loved theater,” she said. Jan grins at Lee, her husband of 52 years, stirs her coffee and professes, “Starlight was my first love.” After more than 40 years of volunteering at Starlight, the Morevitskas, who live in Overland Park, were honored this summer with the 2011 Star of Touring Broadway Award by the New York-based Broadway League.

On the opening night of Mamma Mia!, playing at Starlight Theatre in Swope Park, I was transported. Starlight Theatre launches Damon Runyon’s beloved ‘Guys and Dolls’

When Damon Runyon died in 1946, his lasting legacy, the Broadway musical “Guys and Dolls,” was still four years away from opening night. After he passed, his pal Eddie Rickenbacker, the World War I ace, flew over Manhattan and let the wind distribute Runyon’s ashes like charred snowflakes above the street he loved — Broadway.

Review: Huey Lewis & the News

This show lasted nearly two hours and it was delivered in two parts, and both were steeped in the past.

Huey Lewis is a pop star who has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. His most popular was “Sports,” which has topped the 7 million mark in the U.S. alone. It’s one of those heyday albums that birthed five Top 20 singles. Its successor, “Fore!” fared well, too: four more Top 20 songs.

Review | Starlight's The King and I is a fittingly regal musical

The big Starlight Theatre stage is the ideal place for pageantry. And pageantry is what “The King and I” is all about.
Don’t get me wrong. This is a true Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. Richard Rodgers wrote some of his best music for this show, and the dramatic narrative and pungent lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II give the show emotional depth.

Dreams Come True on Broadway for Area Teen

Starlight Theatre was thrilled this summer to play a part in making a dream come true for Shawnee, KS, teen Betsy Wendorff. A student at Mill Valley High School, Betsy received a kidney transplant from her older sister, Molly, last December after battling kidney disease for years. The Dream Factory of Kansas City reached out to Starlight to shine the spotlight on Betsy and help find her way to Broadway.

RAIN Comes to Starlight & the Audience Loved it

For a theater notoriously averse to precipitation, Starlight took a gamble bringing on the RAIN. Nonetheless, you can chalk up another audience-pleasing booking for the outdoor theater’s Exec Producer Denton Yockey. It may not be your standard Broadway fare, but RAIN… a Tribute to the Beatles (now through Sunday at the Swope Park venue) finishes the summer season quite nicely, thank you.

It was a beautiful night for a musical comedy at Starlight, and "The Producers" doesn't disappoint. Brad Oscar as Max Bialystock and Roger Bart as Leo Bloom were--quite deservingly--the big stars of this show, but talented local actress Cathy Barnett stole the audience's attention when she came onstage as "Hold Me-Touch Me" and the "Showgirl Reject."

Dreamgirls' Moya Angela Pays the Starlight STARS a Visit

This past week the Starlight STARS had the opportunity to participate in a master class with Broadways' very own Moya Angela, Effie White in the Broadway tour of Dreamgirls. Set up like a real audition, each STAR sang 32 measures from a song of their choice with Anthony Edwards accompanying them on the piano.

‘Dreamgirls’ to open at Starlight Theatre this week

To say composer Henry Krieger is grateful for “Dreamgirls” is an understatement. It was his first big hit on Broadway back in the ’80s, and then he worked on the Oscar-winning film in 2006. Now Krieger is part of a new “Dreamgirls” that opened last year at the Apollo Theatre and runs Tuesday through Sunday at Starlight Theatre.
