Starlight Shares Our Platform with Diverse Voices

Last month, Starlight launched a new video initiative titled “Raise Our Voices” in hopes of offering Starlight’s platform to share diverse voices. The title is two-fold—Starlight recognizes the need, now more than ever, to Raise Our Voices against racial injustice, and wants everyone to have the opportunity to do the same.

Through “Raise Our Voices,” Starlight began to offer students with a connection to Starlight’s community engagement programs the opportunity to share what they are feeling through a filmed performance at Starlight and a feature on Starlight’s blog. So far, two students have shared their message through song, with a third performer’s video set to be released later this week. Students can share through song, dance, spoken word—truly however they would like to be heard.

Our first performer, 2017 Vincent Legacy Scholar Lauren Howard, chose to share her voice through a powerful performance of Emeli Sandé’s, “Read All About It (pt. III).” Lauren wants to encourage others to speak out and hopes Sandé’s song inspires others to do so.

2014 Vincent Legacy Scholar Amari Lewis performed next and chose Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Originally released in 1964, the song is just as relevant today. Amari’s hope is that people know that their voice matters—and they have the ability to make change, large and small.
