The fast-paced, musical comedy spoof of the hip hop hit by a similar name, Spamilton: An American Parody makes a splash November 5-17 as the first show of the 2019-20 Starlight Indoors Series, sponsored by Missouri Lottery.
After two extensions Off-Broadway in New York, Spamilton: An American Parody hit the road to play Chicago, Los Angeles and even London’s Off-West End. Now, this talented cast of six (playing 50 characters!) make their Kansas City debut on the Starlight stage.
If audiences are worried that they haven’t seen Hamilton—they shouldn’t be! In an interview, writer and director Gerard Alessandrini (who also wrote the long-running hit Forbidden Broadway, which played Starlight Indoors in 2018) emphasized that audiences don’t have to have seen Hamilton to enjoy Spamilton as it’s packed with parody to spoof the entire theatre industry. Long-running shows like Chicago and The Book of Mormon aren’t safe from his satire. Even well-known and loved Broadway personalities make an “appearance,” with impersonations of Barbra Streisand, Audra McDonald, and many more joining in on the fun. Plus, the physical comedy and skilled singing and dancing will delight even non-theatergoers. Spamilton is truly a show for all audiences.
Even Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda praises Spamilton, tweeting, “I laughed my brains out,” after first seeing Spamilton Off-Broadway. What better endorsement than that?
