With its staging of Hairspray on Halloween weekend, Shawnee Mission South High School officially launched the 14th year of the Blue Star Awards at Starlight Theatre. The school is one of 52 Kansas City area high schools participating during the 2015-16 school year.

Modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards®, Starlight’s Blue Star Awards annually recognize outstanding achievement and excellence in high school musical theatre. The education program, one of the largest of its kind in the nation, is sponsored in part by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City.

Fifty-two schools is an all-time participation record for the awards program. In total, they will produce 56 musicals between now and next April.

“We are always thrilled to welcome new schools and students to the Blue Star Awards family,” said Amy Reinert, Starlight’s director of education and outreach. “As more schools join, awareness of the outstanding theatre being created by thousands of talented, passionate young people across our community increases!”

The six schools either new to the Blue Star Awards or returning after an absence are:

  • Bishop Miege High School, Roeland Park, KS
  • Lansing High School, Lansing, KS
  • Olathe Northwest High School, Olathe, KS
  • Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts, Kansas City, MO
  • Summit Christian Academy, Lee’s Summit, MO
  • Sumner Academy of Arts & Science, Kansas City, KS

The month of November will be a very busy one for the Blue Star Awards, as 38 high schools from Belton, Mo., to Kansas City to Spring Hill, Kan., stage their musicals. And the excitement will continue into the spring!
