Broadway on the Silver Screen
Looking for some outings over the holiday break? Let us suggest a couple of Broadway blockbusters coming soon to the silver screen.
Opening December 19: The newest film rendition of Annie opens in theatres the Friday before Christmas. Columbia Pictures puts a contemporary, comedic spin on the Broadway classic that has delighted audiences for generations. Starring as Annie is Quvenzhané Wallis, who garnered a 2013 Academy Award® nomination for her role as Hushpuppy in Beasts of the Southern Wild. Wallis is an ideal fit for her role as a young, happy foster kid who’s tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan has made it a hard-knock life for Annie and her fellow foster kids. Her reluctant savior turns out to be hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks, deftly played by Jamie Foxx.
Opening December 25: On Christmas Day, Disney delivers Into the Woodsinto the holiday movie mix. The tale is a modern-day twist on several beloved fairy tales, with the plots and characters of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford and Johnny Depp), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), andRapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)intertwined in an original story involving a Baker (James Corden), his Wife (Emily Blunt) and the Witch (Meryl Streep). Acclaimed filmmaker Rob Marshall directs the film, which is based on the Tony Award®-winning original musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine.
Looking ahead to Valentine’s Day 2015, mark the calendar for the silver screen debut of The Last 5 Years. Starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan, the musical comedy-drama film is based on the musical by Jason Robert Brown. The story explores a five-year relationship between a rising novelist and a struggling actress.
