Concert Season Continues with Six August Dates

As summer begins to wind down in Kansas City, there are still many opportunities to enjoy a concert under the stars. Starlight Theatre’s 2016 Capitol Federal Concert Series still has 13 great dates on the concert calendar, including six in August. From funk to classic rock and even comedy, Starlight is the place to be this month!

Jeff Beck & Buddy Guy
Friday, August 5
In March 1965, English rock guitarist Jeff Beck was recruited by The Yardbirds to replace Eric Clapton, on the recommendation of Jimmy Page. In the 50 years since, Beck has won multiple Grammy® Awards and influenced musicians from Slash to Joe Perry. The Yardbirds were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and Beck was also inducted as a solo artist in 2009. He’s touring with renowned blues guitarist and singer Buddy Guy.

Kool & the Gang
With special guests Morris Day & the Time and Bootsy Collins
Saturday, August 6
Founded in 1964 by brothers Robert “Kool” Bell and Ronald “Khalis” Bell, Kool & the Gang is celebrating 52 years of making music. With 25 Top-50 R&B singles and 12 Top-10 pop hits, including the smash hit “Celebration,” the group is credited with laying the foundation for dance music as we enjoy it today.

Weird Al Yankovic
Sunday, August 7
“Weird Al” Yankovic is well-known for adding his own gently satirical lyrics to current hit songs. His shaggy appearance, affection for slapstick and amiable willingness to do seemingly anything for a laugh made him a natural for videos. Yankovic has a loyal following and a solid hold on his positon as the best-selling novelty-song producer of all time.

Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Cheap Trick
Monday, August 15
Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are the creative spark behind Heart, a rock group that found early success in the mid-‘70s and reached even greater heights after a major comeback a decade later. With hits such as “Magic Man” and “Barracuda,” Heart has sold more than 35 million records worldwide.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts became a staple of the Top 10 charts in the 1980s and claim the No. 28 song of all time, “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.” The single held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts for two months in 1982.

The enduring, hard-touring rock group Cheap Trick worked its way to platinum sales with a blend of Beatles-style pop, hard-rock chops and a cartoonish stage act that played Rick Nielsen’s exaggerated mugging and guitar gymnastics against Robin Zander’s teen-idol looks and rich, powerful voice.

Josh Groban
Tuesday, August 16
Multi-platinum recording artist and entertainer Josh Groban is touring in support of his latest album Stages, a collection of some of the greatest Broadway musical theatre songs of all time. At Starlight, he is joined by singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan. With sales of more than 40 million albums worldwide, she is a three-time Grammy Award winner.

Brian Regan

A rarity in the world of stand-up comedy, Brian Regan is a workhorse who spent 25 years touring and building his act without ever branching off into sitcoms or movies. He primarily works clean, making his comedy accessible to all audiences, and specializes in observational comedy, commenting on shared experiences and questioning behavior and language.
