That’s why he believes it’s vital to support the nonprofit organizations he cares about and ensure they have the resources they need to fulfill their mission.
Denton shares his history with Starlight and why he believes in its magic.
“Now that I am able to engage in philanthropy myself, I feel it’s critical for me to do what I can to make sure Starlight can continue to touch more lives in the way it did mine.”
Q: Describe your personal history with Starlight.
A: Starlight has been part of my life since I was 6 years old. One of my most vivid memories was seeing the iconic towers and stage in person for the first time in 2003. Growing up, I always looked forward to summertime, not only for days at the swimming pool and time off from school, but for my annual trip from my rural hometown to Starlight to experience that special bit of magic.
Q: Why is philanthropy important to you?
A: Philanthropy is important to me because it creates opportunities and fosters community. Being from a rural community in Missouri, I had limited access to the arts growing up. Starlight has given me opportunities to learn and grow both personally and professionally, which has changed my life. Now that I am able to engage in philanthropy myself, I feel it’s critical for me to do what I can to make sure Starlight can continue to touch more lives in the way it did mine.
Q: What first inspired you to support Starlight, and why do you continue?
A: My first visit was enough for me to know how incredibly lucky we are as a community to have Starlight and to recognize the importance of its sustainability and success. However, I became even more passionate as I aged and became involved in Starlight beyond the performances. This included taking masterclasses in high school and joining the Young Friends of Starlight Steering Committee. Beyond my personal involvement, through my work at the Children’s Place, I’ve also gotten to see the impact that Starlight’s community engagement programs, like Just Imagine, can have on children and families.
Q: Do you have any memories of engaging with Starlight that you’d like to share?
A: Starlight’s locally produced shows are always extraordinary experiences for me. Sitting amongst the families and friends of the local performers and seeing the pride and excitement on their faces as they watch their people perform on Kansas City’s largest stage is an absolute thrill and a reminder of how unique and special the Starlight experience is.
