Kansas City Mayor Sly James is known for his bow ties – and for his love of all things Kansas City, including Starlight Theatre!

Mark your calendars for Saturday night, June 30 because just prior to that evening’s performance of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Mayor Sly will read aloud from the new children’s book “Mayor Sly and the Magic Bow Tie” live on a satellite stage here at Starlight.

Written by his daughter, Aja James, and her friend Audrey Masoner, “Mayor Sly and the Magic Bow Tie” is a fun and surprising adventure through Kansas City’s history. In the book, Mayor Sly’s trademark bow ties magically transport him back in time to some of our city’s landmarks, including Union Station, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Liberty Memorial. At each stop, young readers learn about key events that shaped Kansas City and meet leaders who made a lasting impact on the region. Since Mayor Sly knows the city so well, who better to take us on this adventure back through time?!

Join us at Starlight’s satellite stage, located under the covered pavilions on the north side of the venue (inside gates 4 and 6), before the June 30 show. Mayor Sly, Aja and Audrey will combine their talents for two readings – one at 7:15 p.m. and a second at 7:30 p.m.

Books will be available to buy and have autographed by Mayor Sly, Aja and Audrey. To attend the reading, guests must have a ticket to the show.
