Principal Sings Bohemian Rhapsody for Snow Day Alert

The snow is starting to melt, roads are clear and schools in the Kansas City area are back in session. Last week, many parents received automated messages alerting them of school closings. Most likely your alert didn’t sound like Kentucky principal James Detwiler’s message.

Sick of breaking the same news to parents, Principal Detwiler gave his snow day announcement a rock reboot. With the help from his school’s creative drama teacher, Chad Caddell, Detwiler sang the message to the tune of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Some lyrics: “School is canceled (school is canceled)/school is canceled (school is canceled)/Because it’s co-oh-oh-oh-ohld/So everyone grab a Snuggie and watch TV/or play the Wii/and maybe reeaaaad.”

“We like to have fun at our school,” said Detwiler, in describing the video for YouTube. “So, after several school closings due to snow and cold, we recorded this call to parents to see if we could make them laugh. I think we succeeded.”

This summer Starlight Theatre will be staging the touring production of We Will Rock You, featuring the music of Queen. We Will Rock You is the musical that rocks harder than any other and will take the Starlight stage June 17-22, 2014.
