Recently, a new trend took the social media world by storm—TikTok creators began adapting popular songs to 19th century sea shanties. Even Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber joined in on the fun! Starlight recently hopped on the trend, too, with staff members showing off their creativity and vocal skills by turning popular Broadway songs into sea shanties.

Check out our Ticket Services Concert Manager, Genie Haggard, singing Defying Gravity from Wicked.

Traditionally, sailors sang these folk tunes while working in the shipyard, helping to make the day go by as they completed heavy, laborious tasks. While they’re sung to a steady rhythm, they’re also many times improvised. The recent social media trend began when a Scottish postman named Nathan Evans started singing folk songs and posting them to TikTok. Now, there are endless sea shanty videos for audiences to peruse. And we’re keeping them coming from Starlight!

Starlight’s Donor Relations Manager, Andrew Lang, got in on the trend with “My Shot” from Hamilton.
