On this week’s episode, The Heart of Rock & Roll opens at the Old Globe, The Greatest Showman soundtrack hits double-platinum, Be More Chill extends its off-Broadway run, and auditions for the Starlight STARS of tomorrow are right around the corner.
Huey Lewis Brings The ‘Heart Of Rock & Roll’ To The Old Globe
Inspired by the iconic songs of Huey Lewis and the News, The Heart of Rock & Roll recently premiered at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego earlier this month. The musical follows Bobby and his band, hustling for their big break as they make their rounds on the dive bar circuit in Chicago. Will Bobby get a shot at his dreams? And if he does, will he take it? With hits like “Hip to Be Square,” “Workin’ for a Livin’” and “The Power of Love,” The Heart of Rock & Roll celebrates the classic songs of Huey Lewis and the News alongside a brand-new story. The Heart of Rock & Roll runs through mid-October and stars Matt Doyle as Bobby, who is best known for his role as Jonathan in the CW hit show, Gossip Girl.
The Greatest Showman soundtrack refuses to go away
The Greatest Showman’s soundtrack continues to top the charts, most recently becoming certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. With songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the same songwriting duo that brought us 2017’s Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen, this honor adds to the list of successes for the American musical film’s soundtrack. It was the first soundtrack to spend three consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 since 2014 and spent 20 weeks at #1 on the U.K. Official Albums Chart - more than any album in modern chart history. So, will this hit musical film make it to Broadway? Rumors have been swirling for months, but until confirmed, fans will continue enjoy playing The Greatest Showman soundtrack on repeat.
Be More Chill Extends Off-Broadway Engagement
The Off-Broadway hit musical with an online cult following, Be More Chill, has extended its limited engagement at New York’s Signature Theatre through September 30. Although it originally opened to mixed reviews, Be More Chill quickly became an online sensation. It was soon the second most-talked about show on Tumblr, only behind Hamilton, and the soundtrack had been streamed more than 150 million times prior to the show’s August 9th opening. Based on a book by the same name, Be More Chill follows Jeremy, a teenager who is coming of age in a digital world.
Audition for Starlight STARS of Tomorrow
Do you know a student in grades 6, 7 or 8 who loves to sing, dance and act? Encourage him or her to audition for Starlight STARS of Tomorrow--a music theatre training and performance program for area youth. Members of Starlight STARS of tomorrow receive training in acting, singing and dance, attend a master class with a local theatre professional, and build foundational skills that will allow them to grow in their craft. They also create and perform a medley of holiday music at events throughout the metro in late fall and early winter. Auditions will take place Tuesday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Oct. 6.
