Upcoming Workshop for Middle School Students

Students in 6th-8th grades are invited to Starlight for a free musical theatre exploration workshop 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, October 12. The workshop is part of the Vincent Legacy Scholarship program and is for BIPOC students who want to learn more about performing arts or who may want to apply for a scholarship through the program.

During the workshops, students will have the opportunity to participate in acting, singing, and dance. Teaching artists will guide students through the basics of musical theatre, helping them experience what training might look like in the various areas.

For acting, students will learn techniques for projection, stage presence, and participate in acting games. The singing section will explore basic vocal techniques, vocal warm up exercises, and group singing.

During dance, students will learn a short movement combination as a group, while learning how to apply different techniques to be more comfortable with dance. Participants will be expected to explore all three areas as a group.

The workshop is free, but an RSVP is required. The workshop is limited to 30 students.

Vincent Legacy Scholarship

For 20 years, Starlight has proudly awarded $2,500 Vincent Legacy Scholarships to middle school students throughout metropolitan Kansas City.

Established with a generous contribution from longtime Starlight supporters Greg and Rebecca Reid, the scholarships provide BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) youth with funds to pursue professional training and experience the life-expanding possibilities of the performing arts.

To qualify, students in 6th-8th grades must display talent and passion for the performing arts, have a strong interest in community service, and audition for the selection committee at Starlight.
