Starlight’s first foray into art exhibitions has been a hit with Van Gogh Alive. Presented by Starlight and The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Van Gogh Alive opened at Starlight Theatre October 23 and critics and patrons have both loved the multi-sensory experience. By popular demand, Van Gogh Alive has now been extended by two weeks—through January 14, 2022.
Van Gogh Alive is no ordinary art exhibition. From start to finish, visitors are surrounded by a vibrant symphony of light, color, sound and fragrance. Van Gogh’s masterpieces come to life, giving visitors the sensation of walking right into his paintings, a feeling that is simultaneously enchanting, entertaining and educational. Adults and children delight in the super-scale show, viewing artworks from new angles and discovering unique perspectives.
At Starlight Theatre, indoor spaces have been transformed into exhibit areas for Van Gogh Alive. Patrons enter through Gate 8 (across from the Zoo entrance) and may catch a glimpse of the Starry Night private event space before entering the Van Gogh Café. Enjoy a special Roasterie blend coffee or local pastry in the café before or after enjoying the exhibit.
Down the hallway, in Starlight’s 12,000 square foot Cohen Community Stage House, is where the experience truly begins. In the first space, patrons can learn about Van Gogh’s life and works and step into Van Gogh’s famous “Bedroom in Arles” for a photo opportunity. Move into the next space for a multi-sensory experience—28 floor to ceiling screens surround the room, projecting more than 3,000 images in the space. Grab a seat for the 42-minute loop or wander the space to truly take in each and every image, quote and piece of information Van Gogh Alive has to offer.
Finally, the AARP Kansas City Sunflower Selfie Room offers a mesmerizing look at the inspiration for one of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings. More than 10,000 sunflowers surround the mirror-lined walls and hang from the ceiling. Grab another photo before heading back to the café!
Van Gogh Alive is open 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and tickets are available online, by calling the box office at 816-363-7687, or by visiting the theatre at 4600 Starlight Road, Kansas City, MO 64132. Catch this exciting experience now through January 14, 2022.
