Vincent Legacy Scholars, Little Mermaid Live on ABC and new songs from Waitress
Earlier this month, Starlight leaders, supporters and staff honored our four most recent Vincent Legacy Scholarship recipients on stage prior to the Sunday evening performance of A Bronx Tale. These students each earned $2,500 scholarships to use toward their future arts training, and enjoyed dinner and a Starlight tour with their families prior to the on-stage recognition. After being awarded on stage, the group enjoyed the performance of A Bronx Tale. We’re so proud of these students and can’t wait to see what they continue to accomplish with these scholarships!
Schedule of Upcoming and Announced Broadway Shows
With musicals like The Prom, Be More Chill and The Cher Show taking their final Broadway bows this month, shows have started to line up which theatres they will take over on the Great White Way this fall and spring. So far, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is set for an October opening at the Longacre Theatre, for a limited 16-week engagement. In March of next year, Diana, the musical about the late Princes, will take its Broadway bow at the same theatre, and Six, which tells the story of six of Henry the eighth’s infamous wives, is set to open at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in March of 2020 as well.
'Little Mermaid' Live Starring Auli'i Cravalho Set at ABC
In addition to the remake of the original Disney movie to be released later this year, ABC has just announced that another Little Mermaid adaptation is in the works. The Little Mermaid Live is the second made-for-TV-remake that the network has done, but follows other networks’ lead as their first foray into the live musical venture. The Little Mermaid Live hasn’t announced the entire cast yet - but we know that Moana’s Auli’i Cravalho will star as Ariel, Queen Latifah will play Ursula, and Shaggy will portray Sebastian. We can’t wait for this live musical to premiere on ABC November 5 of this year.
Sara Bareilles Releases Never-Before-Heard Waitress Songs on New Album
Sara Bareilles, the composer and lyricist behind the Broadway hit Waitress, has announced the release of a new EP - What’s Not Inside: The Lost Songs from Waitress. The seven-track, extended play digital album includes a handful of songs, demos and outtakes that didn’t make the final show on Broadway, like “Falling In Love Pie” and “Without a Believer.” Waitress is the Tony-nominated musical that tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage, and finishes its Broadway run later in early 2020.
